Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St. Petersburg on Monday, expressing hope that the Iranian people would overcome what he described as a difficult period. He also said peace in the Middle East should prevail soon, according to Russian state media.
Diplomatic talks focus on regional stability
During the meeting, Putin said Russia stands ready to support efforts that serve both Iran’s interests and broader regional stability. Moreover, he emphasized that Moscow aims to help achieve peace as quickly as possible following escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In addition, Russia has offered to mediate between conflicting parties after recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which Moscow has condemned. It has also repeatedly proposed storing Iran’s enriched uranium as a confidence-building measure, although the United States has not accepted the idea.
Furthermore, Putin said he received a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader and asked Araghchi to convey his gratitude. He reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to maintaining strong strategic ties with Tehran.
Strengthening Iran-Russia strategic partnership
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi thanked Russia for its continued support and said bilateral relations would continue to grow stronger. He highlighted ongoing cooperation in political and strategic areas despite regional pressure.
Additionally, Iran and Russia signed a 20-year strategic partnership agreement last year, strengthening long-term cooperation between the two countries. Russia is also constructing two new nuclear reactor units at Bushehr, Iran’s only nuclear power facility.
Moreover, Iran has supplied Russia with Shahed drones used in the conflict in Ukraine, further deepening military and technological cooperation between the two nations.
Overall, both sides reaffirmed their strategic alignment and emphasized continued collaboration amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and beyond.
