LAHORE: The Punjab government has asked the federal government to deploy army and Rangers personnel in several districts ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s possible long march.
According to sources, Punjab has requested Rangers deployment in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali.
The Punjab Home Department has also sought army personnel for Rawalpindi amid preparations for the expected September 27 political activity.
The deployment request covers the period until October 5, according to a letter sent by the Punjab government to federal authorities.
Sources said the request aims to maintain law and order during the anticipated political activity.
The issue was also discussed by the Punjab Cabinet’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice, sources said.
Islamabad seeks additional police
Meanwhile, Islamabad Police has requested 18,000 additional personnel from Punjab and Sindh ahead of the possible PTI march.
Police sources said Islamabad requested 16,000 personnel from Punjab Police and another 2,000 from Sindh Police.
The Islamabad Police also sought senior officers to strengthen security arrangements across the capital and surrounding areas.
The request includes three deputy inspectors general, seven senior superintendents of police and 18 superintendents of police.
Officials are preparing security arrangements as political activity is expected in Islamabad and nearby districts on September 27.
The Punjab government’s request for army and Rangers deployment comes as authorities assess security requirements for the anticipated gathering.
Meanwhile, the additional police deployment sought by Islamabad is intended to support law and order arrangements during the political activity.
The security measures will remain in place through the requested period, subject to approval by the federal authorities.
