ISLAMABAD: Security preparations have intensified in Islamabad and Rawalpindi ahead of planned protests and long marches by opposition parties in the coming week.
Authorities have called more than 22,000 security personnel to Islamabad, while over 30,000 personnel will deploy in Attock to manage potential security challenges. Additional personnel have started arriving in Attock, which connects Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with Punjab.
More forces deployed amid protests
Rawalpindi police have requested 9,000 additional personnel to support local officers during the protests, according to a police official. Meanwhile, authorities have seized a large number of containers to block entry points into the twin cities. Officials plan to block 30 entry points, including 11 in Rawalpindi, to restrict access during the planned demonstrations.
Jamaat-i-Islami, Kissan Ittehad and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have announced protests or long marches towards Islamabad. JI plans a march against the petroleum levy, while PTI has scheduled its September 27 protest seeking the release of founder Imran Khan.
Kissan Ittehad, meanwhile, plans to march over demands for relief for farmers.
Security personnel receive accommodation
Sources said authorities would deploy the Islamabad force under eight DIGs, 10 SSPs, 40 SPs and 58 DSPs. Officials have also arranged accommodation for police officers arriving from outside Islamabad for law and order duties.
According to the plan, authorities will provide 362 officers and officials with 132 rooms across 13 hotels and guest houses. The eight DIGs will stay at Islamabad Hotel in G-6, while 10 SSPs will receive accommodation in Blue Area.
Furthermore, authorities will accommodate SPs, DSPs and inspectors at various hotels and guest houses. Officials are also arranging accommodation for police and Frontier Constabulary personnel from other provinces. Authorities will use government buildings, educational institutions, the Sports Complex, marriage halls and police stations for this purpose. Rawalpindi police have also banned all casual and earned leave until October 1, except in emergencies.
