LAHORE: The Punjab government has installed more than 82,000 QR Pink Buttons on public transport vehicles, rickshaws and online taxi services to improve passenger safety and provide women with emergency assistance.
Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Sherazi said that approximately 22,000 men and women have scanned the QR codes installed in rickshaws and online cabs. The initiative follows special directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to strengthen public transport security and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Sherazi stated that installation teams are operating at 45 locations across Lahore. Authorities have also deployed dedicated teams in every traffic sector, while 12 additional teams are working specifically to install the QR codes on rickshaws.
Under the system, women facing harassment or other emergencies can scan the QR code to seek immediate assistance from the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, the traffic police have established four new licensing centres following requests from rickshaw unions. The centres aim to facilitate drivers and support the implementation of the new safety measures.
The CTO also warned that authorities would take strict action against online cab services that fail to adopt the mandatory security features.
The initiative aims to promote safer travel, improve monitoring and strengthen accountability across Punjab’s public transport network. Officials expect technology-based security measures to help passengers access assistance more efficiently during emergencies.
