The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from September 23 to October 5. The restrictions ban gatherings of five or more people in public places, on roads and in open spaces.
The decision comes ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s planned march on Islamabad scheduled for September 27. Authorities said the measures aim to maintain public order and ensure the safety of citizens.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, carrying or displaying weapons in public places is also prohibited. Additionally, the order bars individuals from encouraging others to participate in unlawful gatherings.
Restrictions imposed for public safety
The Home Department stated that the restrictions were introduced due to serious threats to public peace. Officials added that protecting life and property remains the Punjab government’s highest priority.
Authorities believe the temporary measures will help prevent potential security concerns during the coming days. Furthermore, officials said the restrictions are necessary to maintain law and order across the province.
However, the order does not apply to weddings, funeral prayers, burials, places of worship, courts or government offices. Events that receive official permission will also remain exempt from the restrictions.
Punjab seeks additional security support
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has approached the federal government for additional security arrangements. Officials have requested the deployment of Army and Rangers personnel to assist law enforcement agencies.
The request comes as authorities prepare for the PTI march and related public activities. Security officials continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with relevant institutions.
The provincial government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and protecting citizens during the enforcement period. Authorities have also urged the public to comply with the restrictions and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
The Section 144 order will remain in effect until October 5 unless authorities decide to revise or withdraw the restrictions earlier.
