Authorities Announce Security Measures to Maintain Law and Order
The Punjab government has decided to enforce Section 144 across the province from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram as part of a comprehensive security strategy aimed at ensuring peace, public safety, and religious harmony during the sacred month.
According to official directives, authorities will prohibit the introduction of any new practices, processions, or gatherings during Muharram. The government has also banned the public display of weapons, explosives, and other incendiary materials without authorization from the relevant authorities.
Additionally, officials have prohibited inflammatory slogans, provocative gestures, and any activity that may hurt religious sentiments or incite tensions among different communities and sects. Authorities warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals found spreading sectarian, communal, or racial hatred through social media platforms or any other means of communication.
The Punjab Home Department stated that the restrictions have been imposed under Section 144(6) of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1898, to preserve public order during Muharram observances.
Additional Restrictions Introduced Along Procession Routes
Meanwhile, authorities have placed special restrictions on buildings located along procession routes. The construction of temporary structures, observation points, or platforms on rooftops has been prohibited.
Furthermore, residents and business owners have been barred from storing stones, bricks, bottles, or other potentially dangerous objects on rooftops overlooking procession routes. The presence of spectators on rooftops, balconies, windows, and elevated locations along these routes will also not be permitted during processions.
The government has also announced a ban on pillion riding on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. However, exemptions will apply to senior citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel.
Officials emphasized that protecting the lives and property of citizens remains the governmentโs highest priority. Consequently, law enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure strict implementation of all security measures and restrictions throughout the province.
Moreover, the Punjab Home Department has instructed relevant authorities to launch a public awareness campaign through electronic, print, and digital media to inform citizens about the regulations and encourage full compliance.
Authorities expressed confidence that these precautionary measures will help maintain peace, facilitate religious observances, and strengthen interfaith and inter-sect harmony during Muharram across Punjab.
