Punjab’s electric bike programme has received a record response from young people, prompting Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to order officials to complete the distribution process without delay.
According to the provincial government, the scheme has attracted unprecedented interest from students and young applicants across Punjab. Officials said 607,399 applications were submitted online, highlighting strong demand for affordable and environmentally friendly transport.
Female applicants slightly outnumbered male applicants. A total of 314,445 applications were submitted by women, while 292,863 came from men. The figures underline growing interest among female students in independent and affordable mobility.
Under the Chief Minister E-Bikes Scheme, 100,000 electric bikes will be distributed among successful applicants through a lucky draw. Recipients will be able to pay for the bikes through monthly installments of Rs3,000.
The Punjab government will cover the interest cost on the financed bikes. The initiative is designed to reduce the financial burden on students while expanding access to modern transport.
Female students selected under the programme will also receive free driving training on the chief minister’s instructions. The measure aims to improve road safety and help women use their electric bikes with greater confidence.
Maryam Nawaz said the government would provide necessary resources to support young people, particularly female students. She said electric bikes would make daily commuting easier while helping students reduce monthly travel expenses.
The scheme forms part of Punjab’s wider efforts to improve youth mobility and promote cleaner transport options.
Officials have now been directed to accelerate the remaining process so successful applicants can receive their electric bikes as soon as possible.
