ISLAMABAD: The government has decided not to immediately suspend mobile phone and internet services ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) march planned for September 27, sources said Friday.
A high-level meeting in Islamabad reviewed the government’s administrative, legal and security strategy for the upcoming protest. Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and other senior officials attended the meeting.
Mobile and Internet Shutdown Put on Hold
The meeting discussed the possible suspension of mobile and internet services during the PTI protest.
However, participants decided against an immediate shutdown because it could create serious difficulties for the public.
The meeting therefore directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take no action unless the Interior Ministry issues explicit instructions.
Meanwhile, Punjab has already requested restrictions on mobile and internet services at selected locations in Rawalpindi and Attock for September 27.
As a result, the final decision on any service restrictions remains subject to further government orders.
Government Keeps Talks Open
The meeting also considered keeping negotiations open with PTI leadership.
The government has previously engaged political groups through dialogue, including Jamaat-e-Islami. It has also maintained back-channel contacts with PTI representatives over the planned protest.
Moreover, officials agreed to hold regular review meetings to monitor the law and order situation and adjust security measures when necessary.
PTI Considers Postponing March
Meanwhile, PTI leaders have discussed delaying the September 27 march.
According to reports, a majority of participants at a recent party meeting proposed moving the march to October 5–10. The meeting also discussed contacts with JUI-F and PPP and proposed an All Parties Conference between October 6 and 10.
However, PTI’s position on postponement remains unsettled. A party spokesperson has maintained that only Imran Khan can make the final decision.
For now, authorities continue security preparations while keeping both dialogue and further service restrictions under review.
