Authorities have stepped up security preparations across Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Attock ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest planned for September 27.
Sources say mobile phone and internet services may be suspended in the twin cities and parts of Attock on September 26 and 27.
However, Punjab authorities have separately sought federal approval for restrictions in selected areas, meaning the exact scope remains subject to final decisions.
Mobile and Internet Services Face Restrictions
According to reports, authorities are considering temporary restrictions on mobile and internet connectivity as part of the security plan.
The Punjab Home Department has requested the federal government to downgrade or suspend services at selected locations in Rawalpindi and Attock.
The request reportedly includes restrictions on 2G, 3G and 4G services at sensitive points.
Some reports have also indicated a wider suspension covering Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Attock on September 26 and 27.
Security Meeting Reviews Law and Order
A high-level security meeting recently reviewed arrangements ahead of the expected PTI march.
Officials discussed several measures to control movement towards Islamabad and maintain law and order.
These measures include possible restrictions on major roads and highways connecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the federal capital.
The Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1), M-14 and parts of the Grand Trunk Road have already faced closures at key points.
Major Routes Closed Ahead of Protest
The National Highways and Motorway Police said the M-1 was closed between the Islamabad Toll Plaza and Chachh Interchange.
Meanwhile, the M-14 was blocked between Hakla and Kundal.
The GT Road was also closed at Attock Khurd in both directions.
Authorities have further placed containers and security barriers at several entry points around Attock and Islamabad.
Section 144 Imposed in Islamabad
Islamabad’s district administration has also imposed restrictions on public gatherings.
Section 144 is currently in force in the federal capital, while authorities have prohibited gatherings under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act 2024.
The administration has warned that violations could result in legal action.
Punjab has also imposed restrictions on gatherings across the province amid security concerns and the expected protest activity.
Rangers Deployment Requested
The Punjab government has requested the deployment of Pakistan Rangers in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali.
According to the request, Rangers would assist the provincial police with security duties from September 22 to October 5.
Three Rangers companies have been requested for Rawalpindi, including one for Rawalpindi city and two for Taxila.
Citizens Advised to Plan Ahead
The security measures could affect travel, communication and daily activities in the affected areas.
Citizens in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Attock should plan essential travel in advance and remain alert to official announcements regarding connectivity and road closures.
