Pakistan Set to Elect New Prime Minister on March 3rd

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly of Pakistan is poised to embark on the crucial task of electing the nation’s next prime minister on Sunday, March 3, as per the schedule unveiled on Thursday.

The procedural timeline involves the submission of nomination papers for the prime ministerial position on Saturday, March 2, followed by a thorough scrutiny process, set to conclude by 3 pm on the same day.

On the designated day, the National Assembly will convene, and the Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) will exercise their votes to determine the successor to the prime ministerial role.

The ruling coalition, spearheaded by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) and comprising six parties, has endorsed Shehbaz Sharif as its candidate for the coveted position. Shehbaz Sharif will contend with the nominee from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Omar Ayub Khan.

Notably, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has pledged its support to Shehbaz Sharif, opting not to seek ministerial positions and choosing to remain outside the government.

In the 336-member house, a candidate requires a minimum of 169 votes for a successful bid to become the prime minister. The ruling coalition has already secured a robust position with at least 208 votes, ensuring a comfortable margin.

The voting process for the prime minister, as well as for chief ministers of provinces, is conducted through a show of hands, in accordance with Article 226 of the Constitution. This upcoming election holds significant implications for the leadership and governance of Pakistan in the forthcoming term, shaping the nation’s political trajectory.
