ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), declared that his party would abstain from participating in the election process for key positions in the National Assembly, including the speaker, deputy speaker, prime minister, and president.
Addressing the media after the inaugural session of the National Assembly, Maulana Fazl affirmed that the JUI-F would firmly position itself on the opposition benches during this parliamentary term.
Expressing their stance, Maulana Fazlur Rehman emphasized that his party would not be involved in the election proceedings for the speaker, deputy speaker, and prime minister of the National Assembly. This decision comes as a significant move, signaling the JUI-F’s strategic positioning within the political landscape.
A day earlier, a high-profile delegation comprising leaders from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and other allied parties met Maulana Fazlur Rehman before the commencement of the National Assembly’s inaugural session. Notable figures such as Ayaz Sadiq, Saad Rafique, and Ahsan Iqbal from PML-N, along with PPP’s Khursheed Shah, Yusuf Raza Gilani, and Naveed Qamar, among others, engaged in discussions with Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
Ayaz Sadiq, nominated for the National Assembly speaker’s position, expressed satisfaction with the meeting, stating that they had a “good” conversation with Maulana Sahib. However, concerns raised by Maulana Fazlur Rehman during the meeting indicate that there are issues to be addressed, setting the stage for ongoing political developments in the days ahead.
