Illegal Nikkah Case
The proceedings in the illegal nikkah case involving Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were adjourned after a lengthy hearing on Thursday, marked by a heated exchange between Khan and Bushra’s former husband, Khawar Maneka.
Judge Qudratullah presided over the case at Adiala Jail for over 10 hours, with four witnesses, including Khawar Maneka, Awn Chaudhry, Mufti Saeed, and Muhammad Latif, appearing. Tensions ran high during the hearing, and reportedly, Bushra Bibi’s lawyer, Usman Riaz Gill, attempted to physically confront Maneka.
Imran Khan asserted during the proceedings that he first saw Bushra on the day of their wedding and insisted that he and his wife were willing to swear by the Holy Quran to demonstrate their innocence. Khan urged the judge to have Maneka also swear by the Holy Quran. In response, Maneka accused Khan of lying and claimed that Khan had ‘destroyed’ his home.
The judge allowed Imran Khan to swear by the Quran but emphasized that it would waive his right to cross-examination. Khan expressed his desire for Maneka to swear while preserving his right to cross-examine.
The hearing is scheduled to resume on Friday morning. Imran Khan has previously been convicted in the cipher and Toshakhana cases, while his wife, Bushra, received a 14-year prison sentence in the Toshakhana case. The unfolding legal drama adds further complexity to the political landscape, potentially impacting Khan’s political standing and the legal implications for both him and Bushra Bibi.
