Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a clear alert for a severe heatwave that will grip most parts of the country this week. Officials expect the scorching conditions to begin from Thursday, May 7, and last until May 11 in southern and central regions.
Extreme Temperatures Likely in Sindh and South Punjab
PMD warned that high atmospheric pressure will push daytime temperatures sharply higher. Cities in Sindh such as Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur, and Dadu may see maximums between 46°C and 50°C. Several districts in southern Punjab, including Multan, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan, will likely record 43-47°C.
Transitioning to other areas, upper regions including Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and Faisalabad will experience 39-43°C between May 8 and 10. Karachi will also face very hot and uncomfortable weather, with temperatures hovering between 35°C and 38°C.
Relief Expected for Northern Areas Later
However, a shallow westerly weather system will bring some relief to upper parts of the country from the evening of May 10 until May 13. This change should ease the intense heat in northern and central Punjab as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
PMD strongly advised citizens, especially children, elderly people, and women, to avoid direct sunlight, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities during peak hours. Farmers should take extra care of their crops and livestock during this period.
This fresh warning comes shortly after Karachi recorded its hottest day in eight years on Monday, when 10 people died due to extreme heat. The National Disaster Management Authority has already placed hospitals on high alert and issued emergency guidelines nationwide. Authorities urge everyone to follow safety instructions and prepare well to avoid any heat-related emergencies in the coming days.
