The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Lahore has raised strong objections to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council’s (PMDC) disciplinary action against 15 doctors.
The PMDC Disciplinary Committee suspended the medical licenses or registrations of the doctors for six months. According to the PMA, the decision followed recommendations from the Punjab government.
PMA Questions Disciplinary Process
The Punjab government accused the doctors of disrupting patient care during protests. The allegations also included blocking roads and closing wards and emergency services.
In addition, the doctors faced allegations over inappropriate statements posted on social media.
The PMA said it has consistently maintained that doctors must not put patients’ lives at risk during protests. However, the association questioned the procedure followed before disciplinary action was taken.
According to PMA Lahore, authorities should have conducted a comprehensive, impartial and transparent investigation before suspending the doctors’ licenses.
The association also objected to the alleged disregard of the doctors’ explanatory statements. It said this approach violates their professional and constitutional rights.
Association Calls for Immediate Suspension of Action
PMA Lahore officials have called for the immediate suspension of the PMDC’s disciplinary action against the affected doctors.
Furthermore, the association demanded a detailed investigation through an independent committee. It also called for giving each affected doctor a full opportunity to present their case.
The PMA said the doctors’ demands should also receive serious consideration. It urged authorities to take concrete steps to address those demands instead of focusing only on disciplinary measures.
The association further stressed that future action should follow principles of transparency and justice. It also opposed unilateral decisions in matters involving doctors and their professional rights.
PMA Urges Doctors to Keep Protests Peaceful
While defending the medical community, PMA Lahore also urged doctors to exercise caution during protests.
The association appealed to doctors to stage demonstrations peacefully and remain within constitutional and legal boundaries. At the same time, it stressed that patient safety must remain a priority.
The PMA said doctors should under no circumstances put patients’ lives at risk during demonstrations.
The association also reaffirmed its support for the medical community during challenging circumstances. It called for dialogue, due process and meaningful consideration of doctors’ concerns alongside the protection of patients’ rights.
