Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday condemned the Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which reportedly killed 12 people and injured 309 others. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to Saudi Arabia’s security under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday, prompted the Saudi-led coalition to promise a decisive response against Yemen’s Houthis. Saudi civil aviation officials reported that hundreds suffered injuries, including several people who sustained serious wounds.
Pakistan Reaffirms Support For Saudi Arabia
In a statement posted on X, PM Shehbaz described attacks targeting civilians and critical infrastructure as completely unacceptable. He warned that such violence threatened regional peace and stability and violated international law.
Furthermore, the prime minister called for an immediate end to such acts of violence. He also expressed solidarity with Riyadh and reiterated Pakistan’s support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security.
Shehbaz highlighted the two countries’ longstanding brotherly relations and cited the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement as a foundation for their security commitments. His remarks underscored Islamabad’s continued support for Riyadh amid rising regional tensions.
Saudi-Led Coalition Vows Decisive Response
According to Saudi civil aviation officials, the victims included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshis, and nationals from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan. Authorities reported 12 deaths in total, while 309 people sustained injuries in the attack.
Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition blamed Yemen’s Houthi group for the strike on King Khalid International Airport. The coalition described the incident as a “full-fledged war crime,” while a diplomatic source attributed the attack to a missile.
The coalition’s pledge of a decisive response has heightened concerns about further escalation in the region. However, developments following the attack will determine how Saudi Arabia and its allies respond to the incident and its wider security implications.
