The Directorate General Immigration and Passports (DGI&P) will stop issuing new Machine-Readable Passports (MRPs) across Pakistan from October 15, 2026.
After the deadline, applicants will receive only e-Passports under the new policy.
However, people can still apply for new MRPs until October 14, 2026. Existing MRPs will remain valid until their expiry dates.
New MRPs to Stop From October 15
According to a circular issued by DGI&P, passport offices across Pakistan have been informed about the change. The department has also directed Pakistani missions abroad to implement the new policy.
Relevant officials must inform applicants about the shift from MRPs to e-Passports.
Applicants who still want a new MRP therefore need to submit their applications before the October 14 deadline.
Expired MRPs Will Not Be Renewed
The new policy will also affect people who currently hold Machine-Readable Passports. According to the directive, authorities will not renew these passports after they expire.
Instead, applicants will need to obtain an e-Passport when they require a new travel document.
The change will gradually move Pakistan’s passport system away from conventional machine-readable documents.
What Are e-Passports?
An e-Passport contains an electronic chip that stores the holder’s biometric and identification information. The technology allows immigration authorities to verify travelers’ information electronically.
DGI&P says the shift will provide travelers with faster immigration clearance and other facilities.
The introduction of e-Passports is also part of Pakistan’s broader move towards modernising its immigration and passport services.
Applicants Should Plan Before the Deadline
People planning international travel should check their passport’s validity and consider the new policy when applying for a replacement. Those seeking a new MRP have until October 14, 2026 to submit their applications.
From October 15, DGI&P will issue e-Passports instead.
The department has instructed passport offices and Pakistani missions abroad to ensure applicants understand the transition and the requirements for obtaining the new travel document.
