Pakistan’s electric vehicle market is attracting an unexpected new player. Thatta Cement Company Limited has announced plans to enter the automotive industry with affordable electric cars.
The company’s board has approved an investment in a wholly owned subsidiary to launch its electric vehicle business. The decision was disclosed in a filing submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Thursday.
Initially, the subsidiary will import completely built-up (CBU) electric vehicles from China. These vehicles will arrive fully assembled rather than being manufactured locally.
Affordable Cars for the Mass Market
Unlike companies targeting premium electric vehicles, Thatta Cement plans to focus on ordinary consumers.
The company intends to introduce compact and small electric cars designed around the purchasing power and transportation needs of a wider customer base.
It believes Pakistan’s EV market is creating new opportunities. Growing consumer interest, the arrival of international and domestic brands, and government incentives have contributed to the sector’s expansion.
Thatta Cement aims to establish an early presence in this developing market. Its strategy will focus on affordable mobility rather than competing directly in the luxury EV segment.
Local Assembly Could Follow
Although the initial phase will rely on imported vehicles, the company has indicated that local assembly could become a future part of its business.
It may also explore other related automotive activities as the venture develops. However, the company has not announced a timeline for local production.
The investment amount, subsidiary’s name and Chinese vehicle manufacturers involved in the project have also not been disclosed.
A New Direction for Pakistan’s EV Industry
Thatta Cement’s move reflects growing interest from companies outside the traditional automobile sector.
Government incentives and the introduction of new brands are helping attract investment. However, the industry still needs consistent policy support and stronger charging infrastructure.
For now, consumers will have to wait for further announcements to learn which electric cars the company plans to bring to Pakistan and how much they will cost.
