Islamabad: Pakistan has taken a major step toward modernizing air travel by approving in-flight internet and mobile connectivity. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) released a draft licensing framework that will allow passengers to stay connected during domestic and international flights. Officials expect this facility to greatly improve the overall flying experience for millions of travelers.
Key Rules for Safe Operations
Under the new framework, airlines and licensed operators can provide satellite-based telecom services once aircraft reach an altitude of 3,000 meters. This restriction ensures flight safety and prevents interference with ground networks. The license will remain valid for 10 years with an option for renewal, and operators must start services within 12 months of approval.
In moving towards compliance with the regulations, data processing and storage will have to be carried out exclusively in Pakistan. Operators should ensure that their access to international bandwidth is only via licensed local carriers. The PTA requested suggestions and recommendations from stakeholders until May 31, 2026.
Boost for Passenger Convenience
It brings Pakistan’s aviation sector closer to worldwide practice in the field, where providing Wi-Fi connections during flights has become common practice for numerous airlines. Soon passengers will be able to use internet connections, send emails, and even make phone calls. Experts believe the move will also attract more business travelers and enhance the country’s aviation image.
The officials stressed that the use of authorized equipment is essential for ensuring top-class services. These certificates will be provided to selected air taxi operators by the PTA after careful deliberation. This move certainly represents another positive phase in the process of digital evolution in the country and will definitely make air travel more globalized.
