Pakistan has started the process of securing two liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes as winter approaches and household gas demand rises. The government aims to maintain supplies during the colder months, when consumption typically increases across the country.
A tender has been issued, inviting international suppliers to submit bids for the two LNG shipments. The procurement process comes as authorities prepare for higher demand in December and January.
Government Sets Bidding Deadline for November 6
The government has invited international companies to participate in the LNG procurement process. Interested suppliers must submit their bids by November 6, when officials will also open the received offers.
Under the tender, the government has specified two separate delivery windows. The first LNG cargo must arrive between December 14 and 16. Meanwhile, the second shipment is scheduled for delivery between January 9 and 11.
These deliveries are intended to support gas availability during the winter season. However, the final procurement outcome will depend on the bids received and the arrangements made with suppliers.
Why Pakistan Is Seeking Additional LNG Cargoes
Gas consumption rises during winter as households require more fuel for heating and everyday activities. Consequently, the government is seeking additional LNG supplies to help meet the expected demand.
The procurement also reflects concerns about maintaining supplies during December and January, when winter conditions reach their peak.
Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik addressed the issue during a press conference in Islamabad on November 3, 2026. He said the government would seek to meet demand through LNG, even if purchasing fuel proved expensive.
“Seeing people’s distress and also knowing that from December and January, winter will be at its peak even if the most expensive fuel has to be purchased for the piped network, we will bring it in and try to meet demand through LNG.”
Two Shipments Scheduled Across December and January
The proposed delivery schedule covers two important periods of the winter season. The first cargo is expected during mid-December, while the second is planned for early January.
By arranging both shipments, the government intends to support the piped gas network as demand increases. Nevertheless, the procurement process remains at the bidding stage, with November 6 set as the deadline.
The coming bids will determine the available supply offers for the two cargoes. Their scheduled arrivals will also form part of the government’s preparations for winter gas demand.
