May 2026 could bring an unusually long holiday period for workers across Pakistan, as public holidays, weekends, and religious events are expected to combine into multiple extended breaks. Estimates suggest the total number of days off could reach 14 or 15, depending on official announcements.
Early-month break boosts holiday count
The month is set to begin with a three-day break as Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1. Moreover, when combined with the weekend of May 2 and 3, employees in both public and private sectors could enjoy an uninterrupted start-of-month holiday period.
In addition, further breaks are expected later due to Eid ul Adha, although final dates depend on moon sighting. If the Zilhaj moon is observed on May 17, Eid is likely to fall between May 27 and 29. Consequently, this could create a five-day holiday window when combined with the weekend.
However, if the moon is not sighted on May 17 and the month of Ziqad completes 30 days, Eid celebrations may shift to May 28โ30. In that case, Sunday, May 31 would also extend the holiday period.
Possibility of additional extended break
Meanwhile, there is also speculation that the government may announce an extra public holiday on Monday, May 25. If approved, it could connect with the weekend of May 23โ24, creating another extended break before Eid.
Furthermore, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, led by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, is scheduled to meet on May 17 to confirm moon sighting and finalize Eid dates.
Overall, the combination of weekends, religious observances, and possible official holidays could make May 2026 one of the longest holiday periods in recent years.
