Former Punjab chief minister Hamza Shahbaz Sharif has inaugurated a preservation project at Islamabad’s historic Shah Allah Ditta Buddhist Caves. The initiative aims to protect Pakistan’s Buddhist heritage and promote the country’s shared cultural history.
The centuries-old caves provide evidence of Buddhist communities and religious practices in the region. During the ceremony, officials briefed Hamza Shahbaz on the project’s completion, key features and overall cost.
Project Highlights Cultural and Religious Heritage
A documentary showcasing the caves’ historical and archaeological importance was also screened at the inauguration.
Addressing the ceremony, Hamza Shahbaz praised the National Heritage and Culture Division for preserving the historic site. He said protecting heritage from different religious traditions reflected respect for minorities and their places of worship.
He added that the project could strengthen Pakistan’s international image and attract visitors interested in its cultural history.
Improved Road Access Proposed
Hamza Shahbaz also called for a better and more direct road to the caves. He asked Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi to pursue the proposal with relevant authorities.
Improved access, he said, could encourage tourism, support local businesses and create employment opportunities for nearby communities.
Government Seeks to Promote Buddhist Tourism
Aurangzeb Khan Khichi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Buddhist heritage sites across Pakistan. He also urged the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation and media organisations to raise awareness about the caves.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, lawmakers and diplomats from Buddhist countries. Officials hope the restored site will encourage cultural exchange, religious harmony and domestic and international tourism.
