North Korea has fired several ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, according to South Korea’s military, raising fresh concerns about security on the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected multiple launches from the Pyongyang area at around 9:20 a.m. local time. The missiles travelled towards the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.
Following the launches, South Korean forces increased surveillance and strengthened monitoring for possible additional missile activity.
South Korea Steps Up Military Surveillance
South Korea’s military said it was closely monitoring developments after detecting the launches. Officials also remained alert for further tests as regional tensions continued.
The latest launch adds to a series of weapons-related developments involving the two Koreas. Earlier this month, North Korea conducted another ballistic missile test that reportedly incorporated artificial intelligence technology.
North Korea Claims AI Technology in Missile Test
Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said the missile tested on October 3 could alter its flight path at low altitude. She also claimed that developers had incorporated artificial intelligence into the weapon.
Meanwhile, South Korea announced the successful test of its first domestically developed hypersonic glide vehicle. Such weapons use rocket boosters or ballistic missiles to reach high altitudes before gliding towards their targets.
The developments highlight the continuing competition between Seoul and Pyongyang to strengthen their military capabilities.
Korean Peninsula Tensions Remain High
Security tensions have also increased following a landmine incident in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), where three South Korean soldiers were injured when two mines exploded. A joint investigation by South Korea and the United Nations alleged that North Korea had planted the mines more than a year earlier. However, Pyongyang strongly denied responsibility.
The latest missile launches come against this tense backdrop, with South Korea maintaining heightened vigilance while monitoring North Korea’s military activities.
