The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) is preparing a street movement to demand new administrative units across the country.
Party chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui announced a major rally on Karachi’s Sharea Faisal on November 29. He made the announcement during a workers’ convention at KMC Park in PIB Colony on Sunday.
The party says administrative restructuring is necessary to improve governance and ensure a fair distribution of resources.
MQM-P Calls for Constitutional Referendums
Addressing party workers, Siddiqui called for referendums under the Constitution to determine public support for creating new administrative units in Sindh and the other three provinces.
He argued that the existing provincial system had failed to provide inclusive governance. He also criticised what he described as the concentration of political power and resources among influential families.
Siddiqui said the November 29 rally would mark an important step in the party’s campaign.
Farooq Sattar Supports Administrative Restructuring
Senior MQM-P leader Dr Farooq Sattar also addressed the gathering. He argued that the existing four-province arrangement had reinforced the influence of a limited number of political families.
Sattar called for participatory governance and stronger representation at the grassroots level. He also criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party over its handling of Sindh during its 18 years in power.
However, he maintained that creating new administrative units would not weaken Sindh’s cultural identity. He said MQM-P would continue to respect Sindhi traditions, including the cap and ajrak.
Party Mobilises Workers Ahead of Rally
Former Karachi mayor Wasim Akhtar urged party workers to remain united under Siddiqui’s leadership. The convention also attracted senior MQM-P leaders, lawmakers and workers from Karachi’s District East.
The party now plans to expand its mobilisation campaign ahead of the November 29 rally. Its demand for administrative restructuring is expected to remain a central issue in its political activities.
