Netflix is expanding the world of Bridgerton with a new prequel focused on the early life and romance of Violet Bridgerton, the beloved matriarch of the family. Announced on October 8, the upcoming limited series will explore how a young Violet falls in love with her future husband, Viscount Edmund Bridgerton.
The project will offer fans a closer look at the relationship that shaped the family at the heart of the hit Regency-era drama.
Shonda Rhimes Returns to the Bridgerton Universe
Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will lead the new series as writers, showrunners and executive producers. Tom Verica will direct, while Shondaland’s Betsy Beers will also serve as an executive producer.
Ruth Gemmell currently portrays Violet in the main Bridgerton series. The prequel, however, will focus on a younger version of the character and her journey before she became the family’s formidable mother figure.
Netflix has not yet announced the cast for the upcoming project or revealed its official title.
Violet and Edmund’s Romance Takes Centre Stage
The prequel will tell the story of Violet’s relationship with Edmund Bridgerton, whose marriage to Violet produced the eight Bridgerton siblings featured in the main series.
Edmund’s death following a bee sting remains a significant part of the family’s history. His absence shaped Violet’s life and her approach to raising her children.
By exploring their romance, the new series could provide further context for Violet’s character and the emotional history behind the family’s relationships.
The announcement follows the success of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the franchise’s first major television spin-off, which explored the early romance between Queen Charlotte and King George III.
Bridgerton Season 5 Also Moves Forward
The new prequel arrives as the fifth season of Bridgerton remains in production in London. The upcoming season will focus on Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, portrayed by Masali Baduza.
Since its debut in 2020, Bridgerton has attracted a global audience through its romantic storylines, lavish costumes and dramatic portrayal of Regency-era society.
Although Netflix has not announced a release date for Violet’s prequel, the project signals the franchise’s continued expansion. Its focus on the family matriarch will allow viewers to discover the love story behind one of the series’ most important characters.
