Military Operations Expand Amid Rising Cross-Border Hostilities
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday ordered fresh military strikes on targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs, signaling a new escalation in the conflict with Hezbollah and raising concerns about ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region.
According to Israeli officials, Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz directed the military to target what they described as Hezbollah positions in the Dahiyeh district, citing repeated ceasefire violations and attacks against Israeli communities.
The decision followed intensified fighting in southern Lebanon over the weekend. Israeli forces reportedly expanded ground operations and advanced into additional areas as part of a broader military campaign against Hezbollah.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah said it continued operations against Israeli targets, claiming responsibility for multiple attacks, including rocket fire directed toward military infrastructure in northern Israel.
The latest developments have heightened fears that the conflict could further destabilize the region and complicate international mediation efforts.
International Concern Grows as Diplomatic Initiatives Face Pressure
At the same time, Iranian officials expressed concern that the escalation in Lebanon could delay broader diplomatic negotiations involving regional security issues. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that developments in Lebanon remained closely linked to ongoing diplomatic discussions and stressed the importance of a ceasefire.
Furthermore, France called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council in response to the worsening situation and growing violence along the Lebanese border.
The United States has also continued diplomatic engagement between Israel and Lebanon. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly held separate discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Netanyahu to explore options for reducing tensions.
Under a proposed framework, Hezbollah would halt attacks on Israel while Israel would refrain from further escalation in Beirut, creating conditions for a gradual reduction in hostilities.
However, Lebanese political figures questioned whether Israel would commit to ending military operations, while Hezbollah maintained that resistance would continue as long as fighting persists.
As violence intensifies, regional and international actors continue efforts to prevent a broader conflict, though prospects for a lasting ceasefire remain uncertain amid ongoing military activity on both sides.
