ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has notified a nominal reduction of just over one paisa per unit in electricity tariffs for consumers across Pakistan, including those served by K-Electric. With this foolish decision, NEPRA has created a history in Pakistan by reducing just one paisa per unit. The adjustment applies to March 2026 under the monthly Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) mechanism.
According to the notification issued on May 5, 2026, the national average uniform fuel cost stood at Rs7.9850 per kilowatt-hour compared to the reference rate of Rs7.9950 per unit. As a result, the authority calculated a decrease of Rs 0.0102 per unit, offering minimal relief to consumers.
In practical terms, the reduction translates into negligible savings. For instance, a household consuming 300 units per month will save approximately Rs3.06, while a consumer using 1,000 units will see a reduction of only Rs10.20 in the total bill. Furthermore, the adjustment will be reflected in electricity bills for May.
Meanwhile, the minor relief contrasts sharply with earlier expectations of significant reductions linked to quarterly tariff adjustment petitions submitted by power distribution companies. Those petitions, covering the January to March 2026 period, projected a potential relief of Rs63.94 billion due to lower capacity charges, reduced system usage costs, and incremental unit adjustments.
However, the latest notification strictly reflects fluctuations in actual fuel costs for March, which remained largely stable. Consequently, the impact on end-user tariffs has been minimal.
Looking ahead, Nepra has scheduled a hearing on the quarterly tariff adjustment petitions for May 19. Officials indicated that any substantial relief, if approved, would emerge from those proceedings rather than the monthly FCA mechanism.
