Iranโs Revolutionary Guard said it launched a strike on a US airbase in Kuwait early Thursday in retaliation for what Tehran described as an American aerial attack near Bandar Abbas Airport in southern Iran.
According to Iranโs semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the operation took place at 4:50am local time, hours after US forces allegedly targeted an area near the airport in the strategic port city with aerial projectiles.
The IRGC warned that any further aggression would trigger a stronger response. โThis response is a serious warning so that the enemy knows that aggression will not go unanswered, and if repeated, our response will be more decisive,โ the force said in a statement.
However, the US military did not immediately comment on the Iranian claim.
Earlier, a US official said American forces intercepted four Iranian drones near the Strait of Hormuz after determining they posed a threat to regional security. The official added that US forces also struck an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was reportedly preparing to launch another drone.
โThese actions were measured, purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire,โ the official said while speaking on condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile, tensions between Washington and Tehran have remained high despite a ceasefire brokered on April 8 through Pakistani mediation. Earlier this week, US Central Command confirmed strikes on missile launch sites and Iranian vessels in southern Iran, prompting Tehran to condemn the attacks as a โgrave violation of the ceasefire.โ
US President Donald Trump also expressed frustration over stalled negotiations with Iran, saying Washington would eventually โfinish the jobโ if talks failed to deliver a lasting settlement.
