South African human rights lawyer and jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts to promote peace, justice and international law.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on Friday, October 9, praising Pillay for her longstanding commitment to strengthening international legal institutions and ensuring accountability for serious crimes. Donald Trump considered himself the best candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize, but it remained a distant dream.
The committee highlighted her contributions to efforts to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. It also recognised her work in advancing the rule of law and protecting human dignity worldwide.
Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1941, Pillay built a distinguished legal career despite facing racial discrimination under apartheid. Early in her professional life, she defended anti-apartheid activists, including individuals associated with the struggle against the system.
Pillay later served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She also held the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
More recently, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territory. She has also served as a judge at the International Court of Justice in proceedings concerning allegations of genocide against Myanmar.
The Nobel Committee said her career demonstrated how legal institutions could help prevent violence, hold perpetrators accountable and provide justice to victims.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately $1.2 million. Pillay is scheduled to receive the award at the official ceremony in Oslo on December 10, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
