ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a sweeping package of reforms, incentives, and recognitions for overseas Pakistanis, calling them the “crown of the nation” for their unwavering contributions to the country’s economy and global reputation.
Speaking at a high-profile event attended by Army Chief General Asim Munir, federal ministers, governors, chief ministers, and parliamentarians, the prime minister praised the efforts of more than 10 million Pakistanis living abroad, particularly for sending record remittances that support Pakistan’s economy.
“Though they live far from home, their hearts beat for Pakistan,” PM Shehbaz said. He highlighted that $4.1 billion in remittances were sent this month alone, with a projected total of $30 billion by June 2025 — a critical source of foreign exchange that helps stabilize the economy.
Key Announcements for Overseas Pakistanis
To formally recognize and support overseas Pakistanis, the prime minister unveiled several initiatives:
- Civil Awards: Annual awards on August 14 for 15 overseas Pakistanis (men and women) who excel in their fields or send the highest remittances.
- Education Quotas:
- 5% quota in 10,000 seats at federal chartered universities for children of overseas Pakistanis.
- 15% quota in medical colleges, enabling 3,000 students to pursue medical education in Pakistan.
- Skills Development:
- 5,000 children of overseas Pakistanis to receive skill-based training.
- Tax Status:
- Overseas Pakistanis to be treated as tax filers.
- Women Empowerment:
- Overseas Pakistani women will be eligible for government jobs in Pakistan with a 7-year career gap allowance.
Legal and Administrative Support
- Special Courts: A dedicated court in Islamabad will fast-track cases related to overseas Pakistanis. Similar measures are underway in Punjab and Balochistan.
- Ombudsman Support: A special Overseas Pakistanis Office has been established within the Federal Ombudsman’s Office.
- Digital Deed System: The digital sale deed system, initiated by Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz, will be rolled out in Pakistani embassies, starting with the London High Commission.
Calling overseas Pakistanis “ambassadors of the country,” PM Shehbaz instructed diplomats to treat them with respect and facilitate their needs.
Investment and Infrastructure Development
The prime minister extended a personal invitation to overseas Pakistanis to bring investments directly to his office, promising red carpet treatment.
He also announced:
- New international airport in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, to support travel and trade for diaspora communities.
- The Green Channel system at airports — originally introduced by Nawaz Sharif — will soon become operational to ease airport procedures for returning expats.
Praise for Army and National Security
PM Shehbaz praised General Asim Munir, calling him a “true and responsible Pakistani” who always speaks openly and honestly. “Pakistan’s defence is in safe hands,” he declared.
Addressing national security, he acknowledged sacrifices made by armed forces in the fight against terrorism, stating that over 80,000 lives were lost during the peak of extremism. “Our soldiers protect your children by sacrificing their own,” he said, condemning those who spread hate and insult martyrs online.
He also admitted to past policy failures that allowed terrorism to re-emerge in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, pledging continued efforts to restore peace.
Economic Resilience and National Unity
The premier credited the efforts of the PDM government and overseas Pakistanis for driving the country toward economic recovery. He cited declining inflation, rising foreign reserves, and steady growth as indicators of progress.
“If we continue this teamwork, Pakistan can become one of the world’s great powers,” he said.
Calling for national unity, PM Shehbaz urged overseas Pakistanis to reject conspiracies against the country. “Wherever you are, stand up for Pakistan like the army stands against terrorists,” he urged, accusing previous leaders of sabotaging the country’s interests and breaking IMF agreements.
Support for Kashmir and Gaza
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to the people of Kashmir and Palestine, the prime minister vowed continued political and diplomatic support, echoing the sentiments of the Pakistani public.
