NA is set to elect PML-N’s Ayaz Sadiq as Speaker today

ISLAMABAD: The newly-elected National Assembly is electing the PML-N’s Ayaz Sadiq as Speaker this morning.

The Parliament is meeting on Friday, for the second straight day to elect the new speaker and deputy speaker of the house.

Nomination papers for both slots had been filed on Thursday after 302 members of the house took oath.

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz has put forward the name of Ayaz Sadiq for the post of speaker while Sunni Ittehad Council has pitched Amir Dogar as its candidate for NA’s Speaker.

PPP’s Ghulam Mustafa Shah will compete against Junaid Akbar for the deputy speaker’s slot.

On Thursday, the newly-elected members of the National Assembly were sworn in as lawmakers amid uproar from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) who raised slogans.

At least 23 reserved seats in the National Assembly have not been allotted to any political party.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly of Pakistan is poised to embark on the crucial task of electing the nation’s next prime minister on Sunday, March 3, as per the schedule unveiled on Thursday.

The procedural timeline involves the submission of nomination papers for the prime ministerial position on Saturday, March 2, followed by a thorough scrutiny process, set to conclude by 3 pm on the same day.

On the designated day, the National Assembly will convene, and the Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) will exercise their votes to determine the successor to the prime ministerial role.

The ruling coalition, spearheaded by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) and comprising six parties, has endorsed Shehbaz Sharif as its candidate for the coveted position. Shehbaz Sharif will contend with the nominee from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Omar Ayub Khan.
