Met Dept alerts for floods and landslides; anticipates additional heavy rainfall throughout the week

Persistent rainfall covers numerous areas in Pakistan, such as Punjab, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Meteorological Department anticipates further rainfall today, prompting officials to be vigilant against possible flooding and landslides.

The Weather Authority has announced alerts for substantial rainfall and hail in specific regions, potentially causing river flooding and inundation in low-lying zones. Additionally, there is a possibility of landslides in mountainous territories.

Heavy rain and snowfall have been experienced in various locations across Balochistan, such as Khuzdar, Ziarat, Zhob, and Quetta. Pasni experienced the highest amount of rainfall, totaling 90mm.

In Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and upper and southwest Balochistan, rain and thunderstorms are anticipated today. The mountainous regions of Balochistan may experience snowfall.

Heavy rain in Khuzdar, Ziarat, Zhob, Shirani, Muslim Bagh, Quetta, Pishin, Naseerabad, Jafarabad, Mastung, Sibbi, Loralai, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, Kech, Panjgur, Gwadar, and Turbat may lead to flooding in river channels, potentially causing low-lying areas to be submerged.

In Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat, Dir, Swat, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Malakand, Balakot, Kalam, Saidu Sharif, Shangla, Naran, and Kaghan, similar weather patterns are anticipated. Moreover, there is a risk of landslides in these regions.

In Lahore, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) predicts rainfall in the upcoming week. Meanwhile, Karachi expects heavy rain starting from April 18 due to the second wave of westerly winds arriving on April 17.

Quetta is gearing up for a new rain system approaching the region, with significant rainfall anticipated for North Balochistan and coastal areas on April 17 and 18. The Met Department forecasts this system to bring rainfall for three consecutive days.

In Charsadda, increased water levels in rivers are a result of rainfall in the higher regions. The Swat River’s rising water levels have led to residents staying cautious, while officials recommend people dwelling close to rivers to steer clear of the riverbanks. Furthermore, a minor flood has been reported in the Khayali area of Swat.

In Abbottabad, periodic rain showers are anticipated to persist for three days, whereas in Dera Ismail Khan, intense rain has caused storm drains to overflow. Additionally, snowfall has resumed in the mountain ranges of Mount Sulaiman.

The town of Batakhela, located in Malakand, is currently facing flooding in its rivers and canals, particularly in the Swat River, where water levels have risen considerably. Local authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation and collaborating with the Irrigation Department and local administrations to implement preventive measures to reduce damage and safeguard the well-being of the community.
