SIM Blockage
ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi issued a directive on Wednesday for the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) to block all mobile SIMs that have been issued under invalid or expired Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs).
The instruction was part of a broader effort to enhance security and efficiency in managing national identity verifications.
During his comprehensive visit to NADRA’s headquarters, Minister Naqvi engaged with various departments and emphasized the importance of expanding the network of NADRA offices nationwide.
He advocated for these new offices to emulate the model of the police stations recently established in Punjab, which are noted for their efficiency and public service quality.
This move, he noted, would significantly improve service delivery and accessibility for citizens needing identity verification and related services.
NADRA’s Chairman, Lieutenant General Muhammad Munir Afsar, greeted Minister Naqvi upon his arrival and participated in detailed discussions about further improving the operations and reach of the authority.
In a notable policy shift, Minister Naqvi announced the elimination of fees for death certificates to alleviate the public’s burden and instructed NADRA to ensure the stringent security of citizen data.
Emphasizing the necessity for modernization, Naqvi suggested that NADRA offices should be modernized to provide faster services to the public.
He also pointed out the potential for enhanced mobile platform services and effective use of social media to promote NADRA’s initiatives and connect with a broader audience.
In recognition of his contributions, Minister Naqvi lauded the efforts of Chairman Afsar in making NADRA a more public-friendly institution. He also participated in a tree plantation drive at the headquarters, symbolizing his commitment to environmental initiatives.
During the visit, Chairman Afsar presented the NADRA Roadmap for 2024-25, which outlines significant upgrades in security architectures, including cyber security audits and enhanced awareness programs for employees.
The strategic plan also includes upgrading the technological infrastructure and online platforms of registration centers to better serve Pakistanis both at home and abroad.
Additional improvements discussed included the introduction of self-service kiosks at registration centers and the expansion of mobile registration services to increase accessibility.
Plans to extend operating hours at select centers and to offer services on weekends were also unveiled, marking a significant shift towards making citizen services more accessible and convenient.
This suite of reforms and upgrades represents a significant step forward in making governmental services more efficient and aligned with the needs of the public, reflecting the Interior Ministry’s commitment to modernization and enhanced public service.
