Nuclear Confidence Talks
NEW YORK: In an interview with Newsweek, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Masood Khan, highlighted the Kashmir issue as a “flashpoint” and called for comprehensive talks between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan. Ambassador Khan emphasized that discussions should not only address the longstanding Kashmir dispute but also incorporate negotiations on nuclear confidence-building measures.
Acknowledging the complexities surrounding the Kashmir issue, Ambassador Khan expressed concern that while India may believe it has addressed the matter, the perspective of Kashmiris and the Pakistani people differs.
Realistically, he proposed engaging in talks not just about the future of Jammu and Kashmir but also initiating discussions on nuclear confidence-building. The goal is to establish reliable communication channels and prevent potential crises, given the presence of weapons of mass destruction on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC).
Ambassador Khan stressed the need for responsible nuclear weapons states like India and Pakistan to resolve outstanding disputes in Kashmir. He underscored the importance of both nations understanding each other’s capabilities and intentions to avoid unintentional conflicts in the region.
The Newsweek interview delved into the challenge of garnering international attention for the Kashmir issue, with Ambassador Khan pointing out the world’s focus on other global events.
Despite this, he emphasized the urgency of addressing the continued oppression in Kashmir, asserting that the freedoms of Kashmiris are as crucial as those of any people worldwide.
Ambassador Khan also touched on the unique geopolitical dynamics, including the aftermath of the war on terror and the evolving relationships with key nations like the United States and China. He expressed a desire to strengthen ties on multiple fronts, encompassing security, investment, education, and climate change, ensuring that partnerships with other nations do not compromise Pakistan’s diplomatic relationships.
