Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace in the Middle East. He said the country was continuing its diplomatic efforts amid regional instability and rising global fuel prices.
He made these remarks while addressing a federal cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The prime minister also discussed the impact of the regional situation on international oil prices and Pakistan’s fuel costs.
Pakistan Continues Diplomatic Engagement
Shehbaz said Pakistan was playing its role in efforts to restore regional peace, as it had done previously.
He recalled the government’s recent engagements with Tehran and other regional actors. He also referred to diplomatic efforts under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.
The prime minister’s remarks come as tensions in the Middle East continue to affect global energy markets. Consequently, rising oil prices have increased concerns about fuel costs and economic pressure.
Government Seeks to Limit Fuel Price Burden
The prime minister also addressed a planned increase in domestic fuel prices.
He said the government had considered raising fuel prices by Rs15 on Friday. However, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik held discussions with oil refineries about absorbing the additional cost through their windfall profits.
Shehbaz said the government would not allow ordinary citizens to bear the full burden of rising international prices.
Regional Instability Affects Global Oil Markets
Global oil prices have surged amid uncertainty in the Middle East. Any prolonged instability could further affect energy supplies and increase costs for countries dependent on imported fuel.
Pakistan’s continued diplomatic engagement reflects its stated efforts to support regional stability. Meanwhile, the government is seeking ways to manage the domestic impact of international fuel price fluctuations.
