Lufthansa Group and several Indian airlines have suspended flights to and from Riyadh following renewed threats from Yemen’s Houthi group and reported attacks on the Saudi capital’s airport.
Lufthansa Group announced that its airlines would halt Riyadh services until October 16, citing the worsening security situation in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Air India, IndiGo and Akasa Air also cancelled scheduled flights to the Saudi capital.
Air India confirmed that a flight travelling from Delhi to Riyadh returned to the Indian capital on Thursday. Akasa Air also cancelled two scheduled services as airlines reassessed operational risks.
The suspensions followed the Houthis’ claim that they had targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a ballistic missile. However, Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the group’s claim regarding the latest attack.
The escalating violence has disrupted aviation operations across Saudi Arabia. Flight-tracking data showed that several dozen international services scheduled to arrive in Riyadh were cancelled on Thursday.
Saudi authorities had earlier reported three fatalities in attacks affecting Riyadh and Abha airports during the week. Meanwhile, debris from an intercepted missile reportedly damaged a kindergarten and a medical complex in Riyadh.
The Houthis have intensified their campaign against Saudi targets, citing the kingdom’s support for internationally recognised Yemeni government forces fighting the group.
The growing security concerns have raised further uncertainty for international travellers, airlines and regional aviation networks, with carriers continuing to monitor developments before resuming suspended services.
