Hubert Aiwanger, leader of Germany’s Free Voters party and Bavaria’s deputy premier and economy minister, has been found dead in a hotel in Berlin. He was 55.
Police sources confirmed his death on Wednesday after authorities discovered his body at the Neuer Fritz hotel in Berlin-Mitte. Initial reports suggest that health-related complications caused his death, with investigators finding no indications of foul play.
According to German newspaper Bild, Aiwanger had missed the opening ceremony of his party’s new office in the German capital because he was reportedly feeling unwell.
Sources within the Bavarian state government and Berlin police also confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, German newspaper Tagesspiegel reported that police investigations had found no evidence of external involvement. Authorities believe medical reasons may have caused his sudden death.
Aiwanger played a significant role in German regional politics for nearly two decades. He led the Free Voters party in Bavaria from 2006 and became the federal party leader in 2010.
He entered the Bavarian state parliament in 2008. Following the 2018 regional elections, he became Bavaria’s economy minister and deputy premier under Christian Social Union leader Markus Söder.
His death marks a significant loss for the Free Voters party and Bavarian politics.
