Pakistan Scorched by Heatwave as Temperatures Soar to 48°C

Heatwave

A severe heatwave is currently gripping large parts of Pakistan, with authorities warning that temperatures could climb as high as 48°C in Sindh, while Punjab braces for conditions significantly hotter than the seasonal norm.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory, forecasting extreme heat across both provinces and urging the public to adopt safety measures.

The PMD reported that starting Sunday, much of Punjab is expected to experience a sharp rise in temperatures, with values reaching 6 to 8°C above average. This intense spell of heat is projected to continue for at least the next three days.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has echoed these warnings, issuing an alert that outlines the dangers posed by prolonged exposure to extreme heat, especially for vulnerable populations.

In southern Punjab, temperatures are likely to remain persistently high, while northern parts of the province will face increasing heat from April 14 to April 18.

Meteorologists have also warned of the possibility of dust storms and gusty winds during this period, adding another layer of concern for both urban and rural communities.

Health experts have expressed serious concerns about the impact of the heatwave on sensitive groups, particularly children, the elderly, and women.

Medical professionals are advising the public to take necessary precautions, such as avoiding direct sunlight, staying indoors during peak daytime hours, and maintaining adequate hydration levels.

Meanwhile, the situation in Sindh is becoming increasingly critical. Hot and dry winds have already begun sweeping across the province, including the coastal city of Karachi.

The Met Office predicts that most cities in Sindh could experience daytime highs ranging from 46°C to 48°C over the coming days. This surge in temperature is expected to drastically raise the heat index, posing severe health risks.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged citizens to stay updated through official weather reports.

Public awareness campaigns are being launched to encourage safe practices during the heatwave, as the country braces for what could be one of the hottest spells in recent years.
