Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir announced that the Pakistan Army has initiated the legal process to try the planners, instigators, abettors, and perpetrators involved in the May 9 tragedy. The trial is being conducted under the Pakistan Army Act and Official Secret Act, following the established legal procedures derived from the Constitution of Pakistan.
The military’s media wing, the ISPR, stated that he addressed the garrison officers and soldiers at Corps Headquarters in Lahore during his visit on Saturday.
The COAS paid rich tribute to the Shuhada who sacrificed their lives for the motherland by laying a floral wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument.
During his visit to Jinnah House and an army installation, which were blatantly attacked and vandalized by politically motivated rioters, the army chief received a briefing on the events of the Black Day of May 9.
While interacting with the troops, the COAS emphasized that the Army draws its strength from the people, and any attempt to create a division between the Army and the people of Pakistan is an act against the State. Such actions are not tolerable or condonable under any circumstances.
We will defeat the hostile and inimical forces and their abettors who have been making efforts to create confusion through fake news and propaganda. With the support of the nation, all of the enemy’s designs will be thwarted, InshAllah.
Later, Gen Asim visited Services Hospital in Lahore and personally inquired about the well-being of DIG Ali Nasir Rizvi, who had been injured by political miscreants during the May 9 incident.
The COAS visited Qurban Lines, where he met with police officials, paid homage to the Shuhada of the police, and expressed appreciation for their professionalism and restraint displayed during the riots/vandalism. He assured the LEAs (Law Enforcement Agencies) of the Army’s full support for capacity enhancement, intelligence sharing, and training.
