In a decisive move to tackle growing environmental and urban challenges, the Sindh government has announced a comprehensive ban on the manufacturing, sale, and use of plastic bags across the province. The decision aims to address the increasing environmental damage caused by plastic waste.
A statement from the Sindh Environment Department confirmed that violators of the ban will face stringent legal penalties, including prosecution, arrests, and other forms of punishment. The department emphasized that the use of plastic bags will soon be considered a punishable offense once the Sindh cabinet formally approves the ban.
The provincial cabinet is set to meet on April 15 to finalize and approve the ban.
Officials highlighted that plastic bags are a significant contributor to marine pollution, harming coastal ecosystems, and are a major cause of blockages in Karachi’s sewerage system, leading to urban flooding and sanitation problems.
“Plastic bags are not only devastating marine life but also causing severe disruptions in urban areas due to clogged sewers,” stated a spokesperson from the Environment Department.
While the Sindh government has previously taken steps to reduce plastic usage, ineffective enforcement allowed plastic bags to resurface in the market. This time, authorities have pledged to ensure strict enforcement of the ban, with severe legal consequences for anyone caught violating it.
