Pakistan and Italy Forge Agreement to Combat Human Trafficking

Human Trafficking

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Italy have recently taken a significant step forward in their joint efforts to combat human trafficking.

During a meeting between Ambassador of Italy Marilina Armellin and Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Islamabad, both parties agreed to finalize a formal agreement aimed at curbing human trafficking between the two nations.

Interior Minister Naqvi emphasized the urgency of formalizing the agreement and directed the relevant authorities to expedite the process.

Additionally, they agreed to adopt a unified policy to prevent the illegal entry of Pakistanis into Italy.

Furthermore, discussions during the meeting also touched upon the proposal to grant sister city status to Milan and Islamabad.

Minister Naqvi reiterated Pakistan’s firm stance against human trafficking, highlighting that a nationwide crackdown is underway against trafficking networks.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards such criminal activities, asserting that only skilled workers from Pakistan will be sent to Italy through legal channels.

In response, Ambassador Armellin commended Pakistan’s efforts to combat human trafficking and pledged full cooperation from Italy in this endeavor.

The cooperation between Pakistan and Italy in addressing human trafficking comes in the wake of a tragic incident where a boat carrying nearly 200 people, including 20 Pakistanis, capsized near the southern Italian coast, resulting in the loss of at least 63 lives.

The boat departed from the port of Izmir in western Turkey and was primarily carrying migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Somalia, and Syria. The vessel encountered heavy seas and ultimately broke apart near the town of Steccato di Cutro on the Italian coast.

This collaborative effort between Pakistan and Italy underscores their commitment to tackling the global challenge of human trafficking and ensuring the safety and security of migrants.
