NEPRA Initiates Request for Over Rs10 per Unit Hike in K-Electric Tariff

K-Electric Tariff

The Energy Ministry reached out to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Monday, requesting an increase of Rs10.32 in three quarterly tariff adjustments (QTAs) for K-Electric consumers.

The ministry made this request under sections 7 and 31 of the NEPRA Act, 1997, in conjunction with rule 17 of the NEPRA Tariff (Standards and Procedure) Rules, 1998.

The ministry, in its request to the power regulator, sought to apply periodic adjustments for the second quarter of FY 2022-23, imposing a rate of Rs.0.4689 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) on KE consumers. This adjustment aims to maintain uniform tariffs across the country.

If approved, KE consumers will pay Rs10.32 per unit, recovering it through three quarterly adjustments in FY 2022-2023.

In addition, the ministry’s request includes a request for an increase of Re0.47 per unit in the quarterly adjustment for October to December 2022 and a request for the recovery of Rs4.45 per unit in the quarterly adjustment for July to September 2022.

The charges, as per the ministry’s request, would be collected in September and October 2023.

NEPRA issued a notice of hearing, stating that the Ministry of Energy (MoE) has requested the issuance of separate Schedules of Tariffs (SoT) for KE with the prospective application of uniform rates after incorporating tariff rationalization.

Furthermore, the ministry’s request suggests that the adjustment should be applicable to power consumption in April, May, and June 2023, with recovery from consumers in September, October, and November of the same year.

The Energy Ministry also submitted policy guidelines for the uniform application of quarterly adjustments on XWDISCOs and KE consumers, with a request for NEPRA to reconsider its previous decision issued on May 22, 2023.

In response to the ministry’s request, NEPRA has scheduled a hearing on September 11 at 2 pm to further examine the matter.
