Justice Kayani Requests Contempt Proceedings Amidst Campaign Against Judges

ISLAMABAD: According to reports, Islamabad High Court judge Mohsin Akhtar Kayani has requested contempt proceedings against “malicious” social media campaigns targeting judges. This request was made in a letter addressed to IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq.

Earlier reports indicated that another IHC judge, Justice Babar Sattar, had also requested Chief Justice Farooq for contempt proceedings. This came after the personal details of Justice Sattar and his family, including their US residence permits, were circulated online. Justice Sattar emphasized that the privacy of his family members was violated, with their identity cards and permanent residency cards being shared on social media platforms.

It is anticipated that Chief Justice Farooq will form a larger bench to initiate contempt proceedings regarding the campaign against Justice Sattar.

In related news, last month, the Islamabad High Court clarified that Justice Sattar does not hold dual nationality, amidst a “malicious” social media campaign against him following a letter written to the Supreme Judicial Council. The IHC press release stated that Justice Babar Sattar has always held Pakistani nationality and refuted any claims of dual nationality.

The campaign against Justice Sattar originated following a letter from six IHC judges to the members of the Supreme Judicial Council, where concerns were raised about interference in judicial affairs by the country’s intelligence agencies. Justice Sattar is among the six IHC judges who have highlighted this issue.

Furthermore, the ongoing social media campaigns targeting judges raise concerns about the integrity of the judiciary and the safety of judicial officers and their families. Such malicious campaigns not only undermine the reputation of individual judges but also erode public trust in the judiciary as an institution. It is imperative for the authorities to take swift and decisive action to address these threats and ensure the security and dignity of the judiciary, thereby upholding the rule of law in the country.
