Heartbreaking Video
PESHAWAR: In a deeply unsettling event captured on video, Sher Zaman, a resident of Teela Band in Peshawar, was seen attempting to sell his children due to severe financial distress, provoking widespread outrage and empathy on social media platforms.
This heart-wrenching footage ultimately resonated with local authorities, prompting swift action to assist the desperate father.
Sher Zaman, previously employed at a brick kiln which ceased operations two years ago, has since struggled to provide for his family.
The dire circumstances of deep poverty and the lack of employment opportunities led him to contemplate an extreme action borne out of desperation and the inability to see any other way out.
In the video, a visibly distraught Zaman explained his dire situation. “My family is starving, and I can’t find any work,” he stated, gesturing towards the remnants of his collapsed roof—a consequence of torrential rains that rendered his already precarious living conditions even worse.
Overwhelmed by his circumstances, he tearfully declared, “I have become helpless, that’s why I’m selling my children.”
The viral video quickly caught the attention of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Peshawar, who responded promptly. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the DC invited Zaman to his office to discuss and coordinate immediate assistance.
It was decided that Zaman’s children would be placed in welfare institutions where they could receive proper education and care, ensuring their safety and development.
Furthermore, the Chief Executive of Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar offered Zaman a job following the verification of his documents, providing him with a means to rebuild his life and support his family sustainably.
In addition to this, former provincial minister Aqil Shah contributed Rs150,000 to aid Zaman financially during this critical period.
This incident not only highlights the acute struggles faced by some families in Peshawar but also underscores the pressing need for comprehensive social welfare measures.
It is a poignant reminder of the need for systemic reforms to safeguard vulnerable populations and prevent such extreme measures of desperation in the future.
