Government, Military Leadership to Brief Parliament on Rising Terror Threat

The federal government has decided to brief Parliament on the recent surge in terrorism, with an in-camera meeting of the Parliamentary National Security Committee expected next week, sources revealed on Sunday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has initiated consultations on convening a closed-door joint session, effectively transforming both houses of Parliament into a special security committee.

The session will be attended by top military officials, intelligence agency heads, federal ministers, and parliamentary party leaders.

Comprehensive Security Briefing

According to sources, the military leadership will provide a detailed briefing on the escalating terrorist activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, analyzing the underlying causes of the recent surge.

Parliamentarians will also have the opportunity to question officials regarding counterterrorism strategies and security measures.

Focus on Counterterrorism Efforts

The meeting will assess proposals to intensify operations against terrorist groups and evaluate the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) II, a counterterrorism strategy suggested by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

Originally introduced in 2014 following the tragic attack on the Army Public School (APS) in Peshawar, the National Action Plan has served as Pakistan’s primary framework for combating terrorism.

Security sources indicate that the government is considering enhanced counterterrorism measures, particularly in insurgency-affected regions, and may announce new initiatives following the briefing.

The decision to convene a high-level security discussion follows a renewed wave of terrorist attacks, with recent incidents targeting security forces in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
