Eidul Fitr Expected on March 31, Says Suparco

Eidul Fitr

The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) announced on Wednesday that Eidul Fitr is expected to fall on March 31, 2025, based on scientific calculations regarding the moon sighting.

In an official statement, Suparco explained that astronomical data suggests a high likelihood of the Shawwal moon being visible in Pakistan on the evening of March 30, 2025. As a result, Ramadan is projected to last 29 days, with Eidul Fitr likely being observed on Monday, March 31.

Suparco also provided insight into the moon sighting possibility in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. According to its findings, the chances of spotting the crescent in Makkah on March 29, 2025, are “almost impossible” due to the moon’s age being approximately five hours at sunset.

Given these conditions, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries are also expected to celebrate Eid on March 31, following the sighting of the moon on March 30.

In preparation for Eid celebrations, the federal government has already declared a three-day public holiday from March 31 to April 2, as per an official notification.

Meanwhile, the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee, along with zonal moon-sighting committees, is scheduled to convene on March 30 (Sunday) to officially confirm the end of Ramadan and announce the date for Eidul Fitr.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) also issued a statement earlier this month reinforcing Suparco’s prediction. According to a notification released on March 7, the department stated that there is a strong possibility of the new moon of Shawwal 1446 AH being visible on the evening of March 30.

Suparco had previously predicted that Ramadan would begin on March 2 and that Eidul Fitr would fall on March 31.

Eidul Fitr, one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar, marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayers, and self-discipline observed by Muslims worldwide. The occasion is celebrated with communal prayers, festive meals, and acts of charity.

In light of the upcoming festivities, Pakistan Railways has announced special travel arrangements for passengers. The department will run four special trains before and after Eid to accommodate the increased demand for travel, ensuring convenience for people returning to their hometowns for the celebrations.
