Cross-Border Miracle: Pakistani Teen Receives Heart Transplant in India

A teenage girl from Pakistan faced a daunting battle with a heart condition, but her journey took a remarkable turn when she received a second chance at life through a heart transplant from a donor in Delhi, India.

Nineteen-year-old Ayesha Rashan had been grappling with heart disease for a decade, enduring the ups and downs of her condition. In 2014, she sought medical intervention in India, where a heart pump was implanted to alleviate the strain on her failing heart. Despite this effort, the device proved ineffective, prompting doctors to advocate for a heart transplant as her sole lifeline.

In their quest for expertise, Ayesha Rashan’s family turned to Dr. KR Balakrishnan, Director of the Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant, and Dr. Suresh Rao, Co-Director, at MGM Healthcare Hospital in Chennai, India.

After careful evaluation, the medical team determined that a heart transplant was imperative due to a leak in the heart pump. Ayesha underwent an Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) procedure while awaiting the transplant, a period fraught with both hope and financial concerns.

The financial burden weighed heavily on the family, as they lacked the resources to cover the roughly Rs 35 lakh required for the transplant process.

However, fortune smiled upon them when the medical team facilitated a connection with the Aishwaryam Trust, which generously provided financial assistance, alleviating their worries.

Six months ago, Ayesha Rashan underwent a life-changing heart transplant from Delhi, with the surgery conducted at MGM Healthcare Hospital, courtesy of the hospital, following her 18-month stay in the country.

Filled with profound gratitude, Ayesha expressed heartfelt thanks to the Indian government and the dedicated medical team for their unwavering support throughout her journey.

Ayesha’s mother, Sanobar, reflected on their arrival in India, where Ayesha’s vitality had plummeted to a mere 10 percent. Now, with a new heart and renewed hope, Ayesha has been granted a fresh lease on life, a testament to the power of compassion and medical expertise.
