Karachi’s major wholesale markets will remain closed tomorrow following a strike announced by traders. The decision was confirmed by the Karachi Wholesale Grocers Association.
Association Chairman Raoof Ibrahim said Jodia Bazaar, the country’s largest wholesale market, will remain shut. Wholesale grain markets in Lea Market, Dandia Bazaar, Nanakwara, Landhi, Malir, Korangi and Liaquatabad will also observe the strike.
Additionally, the supply of essential commodities from Jodia Bazaar to markets across the country will remain suspended during the shutdown.
Traders Protest Enforcement Actions
Raoof Ibrahim said traders opposed arrests, challans, shop sealings and alleged harassment over rising flour prices. He described the enforcement measures as unacceptable.
He further alleged that officials provided Easypaisa numbers instead of official challan documents. According to him, shopkeepers did not receive proper written challans.
The association chairman claimed traders received challans ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 150,000.
Association Demands Action Against Flour Mills
Raoof Ibrahim questioned why authorities had not acted against flour mill owners. He argued that mills were supplying expensive flour and should face enforcement instead.
He also said several wholesale shops remain sealed, creating additional difficulties for traders. Consequently, the association decided to continue the strike in protest against the ongoing actions.
The closure is expected to temporarily disrupt wholesale trading activities and the supply of essential goods from Karachi’s major markets.
