KARACHI: Karachi police have arrested 15 suspects and recovered 435 stolen and non-PTA mobile phones during multiple operations across four police station jurisdictions in District Central.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Central Dr Imran announced the development during a press conference, revealing that the recovered devices were collectively worth between Rs20 million and Rs30 million.
According to police officials, the arrested suspects were apprehended from different mobile phone markets across the district. The recovered devices included several expensive iPhones.
The SSP said the suspects were allegedly involved in changing and tampering with International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers to make stolen phones usable. They also allegedly modified non-PTA devices to bypass restrictions and enable their operation.
During the operations, police recovered specialised equipment allegedly used for altering mobile phone IMEI numbers.
Dr Imran further disclosed that several suspects operated mobile phone repair shops in different markets across Karachi. Investigators are examining their alleged involvement in the illegal mobile phone trade.
Meanwhile, police have launched further investigations to identify other individuals connected with the network and determine the ownership of the recovered devices.
The SSP acknowledged that street crime remains a major challenge in Karachi and said police were continuing efforts to control criminal activities and recover stolen property.
