Canadian megastar Justin Bieber has joined a star-packed music lineup for the first-ever World Cup final halftime show. Organizers confirmed on Wednesday that the entire musical performance will last exactly 11 minutes. The highly anticipated entertainment event will take place during the tournament finale on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Bieber joins legendary pop icon Madonna, Colombian superstar Shakira, and global K-pop sensation BTS for the Super Bowl-style show. Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin is curating the musical extravaganza. While this entertainment addition is a historic first for a football World Cup final, it has raised some logistical concerns over the length of the game’s halftime break.
Technical Restrictions and Halftime Extension Concerns
The official laws of football strictly state that a halftime interval must not exceed 15 minutes. Even though organizers capped the musical performance at 11 minutes, the overall break might still require an extension. This extra time would account for setting up and quickly disassembling the massive stage on the pitch.
However, this official announcement will successfully assuage severe concerns raised by previous public speculation. Earlier rumors suggested that the World Cup final halftime show could stretch for as long as 25 minutes.
A lengthy entertainment break was previously trialed at the FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. That specific trial stretched the total halftime break to just over 24 minutes. Consequently, it drew heavy criticism from sports analysts regarding the negative impact on player performance and muscle stiffness.
Global Broadcast Scale and Charitable Initiatives
FIFA chief Gianni Infantino highly praised the upcoming event. He stated that the halftime show will be definitely the biggest stage ever. Furthermore, tournament organizers expect a massive global audience of a couple of billion viewers to tune into the broadcast.
The star-studded broadcast will uniquely feature beloved childhood characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets. Most importantly, the entire event will actively support FIFA’s Global Citizen Education Fund. This charity initiative aims to raise $100 million for underprivileged children worldwide during the course of the World Cup.
“The FIFA World Cup brings the world together in a way nothing else can,” Bieber said in a statement.
The famous “Stay” and “Love Yourself” hitmaker expressed immense pride regarding his upcoming performance.
“I’m grateful to be part of this halftime show, and even more grateful knowing it’s already helping expand access to education for children around the world,” added the hitmaker.
Additional Artists and Historic Cultural Impact
Wednesday’s official press release also added more diverse musical talent to the roster. Nigerian singer-songwriter Burna Boy and Venezuelan classical conductor Gustavo Dudamel will join the event. Additionally, Coldplay will perform in an exclusive collaboration with the PS22 Chorus, a famous student choir from a New York public elementary school.
At 11 minutes, this historic show will actually run slightly shorter than recent NFL Super Bowl performances. Those traditional American football shows typically last around 13 to 14 minutes.
Hugh Evans, the co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen, emphasized the grand scale of the concert. He stated that this is the single largest gathering of artists united for a cause since Live Aid. Ultimately, he believes it could well be the most-watched 11 minutes of broadcast music performance in history.
