The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is considering a double-decker electric bus service to give tourists a new way to explore Islamabad.
The proposed service would connect several major attractions through a 25-kilometre city tour. CDA officials are currently assessing the feasibility and expected costs.
CDA Seeks HIT’s Input
The authority has approached Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed buses.
HIT will also provide estimated costs for procuring the vehicles. The CDA will decide its next steps after reviewing the findings.
The authority has not finalised whether it will manufacture or purchase the buses locally.
“We may go for importing buses from China. We are waiting for input from HIT,” a CDA official said.
Four Buses Planned for Tourist Route
Under the initial proposal, the CDA plans to operate four double-decker electric buses.
The 25-kilometre route would begin at F-9 Park and cover several popular tourist destinations.
The planned stops include Faisal Mosque, Lok Virsa and Shakarparian.
The proposed buses would operate as electric vehicles, supporting the CDA’s focus on cleaner urban transport.
Officials said the service could become operational within three months if the feasibility process and procurement plans move forward as expected.
Islamabad Already Has Electric Bus Network
The CDA already operates an electric bus service through a private contractor across more than 20 routes in Islamabad.
The existing fleet includes over 160 electric buses, which carry large numbers of passengers every day.
The service has received a strong response from residents since its expansion across the capital.
The proposed tourist buses would add a separate sightseeing option to Islamabad’s existing public transport network.
CDA’s Earlier Tram Plans Remain Pending
The CDA has also announced plans for a tram service in Islamabad several times.
However, those proposals have yet to materialise. The new double-decker bus plan could offer the capital another tourism-focused transport option.
For now, the project remains at the consultation stage. The CDA is waiting for HIT’s feasibility assessment before making a final decision on procurement and implementation.
